Nez Perce Treaty Buffalo Hunt
The Nez Perce Tribe holds an annual hunting season for qoq’áalx̣ (buffalo) for sustenance, ceremonial, and conservation purposes. During this time select individuals may hunt and harvest American bison. The hunts are held in important breeding and wintering areas for bald and golden eagles directly adjacent to Yellowstone National Park.
In 2016, the Nez Perce Tribe initiated their Hunting Stewardship & Safety program to spread awareness of the harm that lead ammunition can cause and advocate for non-lead alternatives.
Lead exposure is harmful to people and wildlife, and hunting lead-free is an alternative that provides many benefits. Hunting lead-free is described as “choosing the best technology while maintaining a connection to our ancestors as care-takers of this land” (Get the Lead Out!).

For the 2023 hunt, we are proud to be working with the Nez Perce Tribe to provide hunters with non-lead ammunition free of charge.
