The Challenge

Bald eagles face many hazards including electrocution, vehicle collision, sickness from avian influenza, collisions with powerlines and wind turbines, and poisoning from rodenticides and lead. Bald eagles are listed as a threatened species in Georgia under the state’s Endangered Wildlife Act. Minimizing the number of eagle deaths caused by any one source is essential to increasing this population.

The Opportunity

Hunters have an opportunity to participate in bald eagle conservation. Eagles can scavenge on gut piles left by hunters in the field and this food source is a significant risk lead exposure. Hunters can help by voluntarily choosing to use lead-free ammunition to hunt deer and feral hogs. As an incentive for hunters who want to participate, we are offering one free box of lead-free ammunition to eligible hunters.

Who is Eligible?

Postcards with access codes to lead-free ammo purchase sources will be sent to select hunters in the following counties with known eagle breeding populations:
  • Bryan County
